Kate Richardson Award

Kate Richardson grew up in Jeffersonville playing soccer on CYS
and Nordic club teams. At LUHS, she and her teammates won 2
state titles and were runners-up to a third. She played soccer 2
years for UVM, then 2 years for Springfield College. After college,
she played semi-pro soccer for the Vermont Voltage, when they
had a W-league team. Kate was tragically killed by a drunk driver
in 2011 while biking to see a friend.

The award is given in memory of Kate, with input from coaches and teachers, to a graduating 6th grade girl and boy who exemplify the ideals of Cambridge Youth Soccer. Those ideals are:

-Positive Effort and Attitude
-Soccer Knowledge and Skills
-Leadership and Community Service

Winners this year receive a gift certificate to Sports Central in Essex Junction, and have their names engraved on a plaque, which is displayed on the walls of Cambridge Elementary School.

Congratulations to the winners of the
2021 Kate Richardson Awards!

Sayla Rowe and Cole Thompson

Words from Coaches

The coaches and teachers have chosen Sayla Rowe to
receive the Kate Richardson Award.

From Coach Leslie Thompson:

Sayla is a true athlete. Even though she is involved in
several different sports throughout the year she
commits herself and works hard in each sport.
She began playing soccer for CYS in Kindergarten and
since 3rd grade has played on both the fall and spring
teams. Sayla works hard during practices and games and
demonstrates her understanding of the game and what it
takes to be part of a team.
Sayla always comes to soccer with a positive attitude, she
pushes herself to do her best and she encourages her
teammates to do the same. She is a leader in our
defense, not only does she work hard to protect the goal
but she also helps others to understand their positioning
and how to support the attack.
Off the field, Sayla works hard in school and is a huge
lover of animals which shows in her community service to
NCAL. She also volunteers for several events and
fundraisers with SNSC.
Unfortunately, Sayla was not here to accept this award
because she is on her way to Oregon to train with her
new teammates from Burke Mountain Academy. She made
the difficult decision to forgo attending her graduation
with her friends, classmates and family so she can
continue the pursuit of her dream to be a ski racer.
Congratulations Sayla!!

The coaches and teachers have chosen Cole Thompson to
receive the Kate Richardson Award.

From Coach Steve Bredice:

Cole is a skilled and competitive soccer player who works
hard and displays a good attitude.
He is a cheerful and a positive teammate.
He leads by example in play and attitude.
Congratulation Cole!
